REVEALED: Full Specs of Google Nexus One



You want Google Nexus One details, you got it. Yesterday, we posted a Nexus One Android 2.1 walkthrough video, and today Engadget has managed to score a full spec sheet for the phone, as well as some details about its release date.
According to Engadget’s source, the phone will initially be available by “invitation only.” It looks like Google will be deciding who gets invites (hey, Google, call me), but the specifications also indicate that T-Mobile will be able to sell the phone directly to the customers in the future.



The Breakdown


Here are some highlights from the screenshots that Engadget posted:

  • 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, included 4GB microSD card, expandable to 32GB
  • 5 megapixel camera with LED flash and mechanical autofocus
  • 3.7″ WVGA AMOLED screen — in other words, as big as the Droid and brighter
  • Worldwide GSM/EDGE, but 3G only on T-Mobile in the US (supports 2100, 1700 and 900 frequencies, meaning Europe should be covered)
  • 1GHz Qualcomm chip — if accurate, that would make the Nexus One one of the fastest -  if not the fastest — smartphones on the market.
  • Wi-Fi A/B//G/N
  • Bluetooth 2.1
  • GPS
  • Accelerometer


The specs look solid, the phone matches or beats every competing Android phone on the market (aside from having no physical keyboard) and also compares quite favorably to the iPhone (faster processor, nicer screen, wireless-N).
The only caveat for potential U.S. buyers is that, barring some sort of firmware upgrade (assuming the 1900 band is just disabled), this phone will only work in 3G in T-Mobile’s network. If you live in a large city, that might not be a problem, but T-Mobile does have the smallest 3G footprint of any of the major U.S. wireless carriers.
For international users, this is really enticing, because the phone should be compatible with all UMTS bands in Europe, Asia, South America and Australia/New Zealand.
Now all we need is a solid release date and a price. My friend Dan is ready to buy this sight-unseen. What about you? What do you think of the Nexus One?

Panasonic Delivering a Lithium Storage Battery That Can Power Your Home For a Week [Batteries]


After officially taking over Sanyo earlier this week, Panasonic is hitting the ground running with a joint venture aimed at developing a powerful lithium-ion storage battery than could store enough juice to power an average [Japanese] home for a week.
The battery will also include a system that will allow users to monitor their electricity usage through their televisions. Seems like a viable alternative to solar batteries and fuel cells, but I'm curious to know how a week of powering a Japanese home equates to powering a typical American home. Either way, the technology won't be available until sometime in 2011.

Apple Tablet With 7″ Screen Coming in January [RUMOR]











Christmas is coming, and we can’t imagine a better time to revive the Apple Tablet rumors.

We’ve heard it all — from 7-inch to 12-inch screen sizes, with launch dates now mostly pointing to the first half of 2010, but Boy Genius claims they now know for certain just how big the mythical device will be in the end.

According to their report, Apple Tablet is “definitely coming in 7″ size.” This doesn’t exclude a bigger, 10” tablet (although Apple simultaneously releasing two different tablets sounds highly unlikely), but Boy Genius’ source is “100%” about the 7-incher. There’s also a date attached to this rumor, with Apple supposedly set to announce the tablet in January. We won’t mind if they do.

Color-Shifting Contact Lenses Alert Diabetics to Glucose Levels [Contacts]

Diabetics are saddled with the unenviable task of checking their blood sugar levels constantly. But a new non-invasive technology lets diabetics keep tabs on their glucose levels with contact lenses that change colors as their blood sugar rises and falls.

Nanoparticles — is there anything they can't do? — embedded in the hydrogel lenses react with glucose molecules in naturally occurring tears. A chemical reaction then causes the lenses to shift their hues, alerting the wearer to falling or spiking blood sugar levels. The wearer can then make the appropriate adjustments to his or her blood sugar, all without having to carry around (and use) devices for drawing and analyzing blood.

U. of Western Ontario Professor Jin Zhang has just collected $216,000 from the Canada Foundation for Innovation as a result of the breakthrough process to develop other applications for multifunctional nanocomposites, which can be used in everything from biomedicine to food preservation to packaging. We think a head-up display for glucose levels is pretty good, but if nanocomposites can also make the packaging on that blood-sugar-leveling candy bar biodegrade more quickly, all the better.

Sharp develops efficient solar cells for use in outer space

Earlier this year, we reported twice about Japan’s serious plans to go to outer space to generate solar energy and then beam it back to Mother Earth. And today, Sharp has shown the first solar cell that’s not only bendable (we’ve seen that before) but that also withstands conditions in space. In addition, the company says those cells boast a record-high solar efficiency of 36%.

The compound solar cells can not only be bent if needed but even folded. They are less than 20 microns thick and are made by stacking up single crystals of indium gallium, gallium arsenide and indium gallium arsenide. These single-crystal layers are grown on solid substrates before transferring them onto a flexible film base. As a result, the solar cells feature extreme flexibility material-wise.

There’s only a prototype available at this point (sorry for the small picture), but Sharp is working on getting a practical version ready in 2012. The solar cells can then be used for equipping satellites and other space applications.

Specs Confirmed for General Mobile’s Next Handset

General Mobile, makers of the Dual Sim DSTL1 Android handset appear to be nearing completion of their follow up device. We’ve covered the handset manufacturer a time or two here on the site, profiling them as a smaller company with a smart phone worthy of standing next to bigger players. Most recently, we reported on rumored specs for their second Android phone, assumed to be launched in early January.
We can confirm that the following specs for the handset are – they were received directly from the handset manufacturer. General Mobile added that they would be sharing information for the “forthcoming Android devices and new Android projects.” We like the sound of ‘projects’ as it indicates long(er) term investment.

Transparent Truck System Could Actually Save Lives [Concept]


Art Lebedev calls this simple invention—a camera that takes images from the front of a truck to show it on screens in the back—Transparentius. I call it geeneeuzz.

I don't know why this drawing shows a tank at the front of the truck, but I guess that in Russia people drive T-90s like in the US people drive Fords. I wish the technology was so cheap that this could be implemented for real, because I'm sure it would save a lot of lives on the road.
