Printable Nanotube RFID Tags Could Make Wireless Checkout Aisles a Reality
Wireless checkout is many a grocer's dream. It's like Amazon's one-click shopping in the real world, maximizing efficiency for the customer and cutting costs for the supermarket. A new printable RFID tag could make it a reality.

RFID checkout is far from being a new idea—it's already seen small scale implementation in various pockets around the world—but it has never been cheap enough to be a viable, cashier-replacing option. Current RFID tags, made with silicon, cost about 50 cents each to produce, so stamping one on every single item in the store just doesn't make sense.

But a collaboration by researchers at Sunchon National University in Suncheon, South Korea and Rice University in Texas has yielded a new RFID tag that can be printed directly on paper or plastic packaging, eliminating the need for silicon altogether and bringing the cost down to 3 cents a tag. Now we're talking.

The invention was made possible by the wonders of nanotechnology (what isn't these days?). The researchers developed a semiconducting ink, made with carbon nanotubes, that is capable of holding an electric charge. They're currently refining their invention, trying to pack more data into smaller tags and bring the cost down to one cent each.

A fifty-fold reduction in price makes RFID a much more attractive checkout alternative. I just hope someone's still going to bag my groceries.

WiLink Crams Wi-Fi, GPS, FM Transmission and Bluetooth Into a Single Chip [Wireless]


Texas Instruments says that their WiLink 7.0 is the first chip with four wireless radios in one: FM transmission and reception, GPS, 802.11n Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. What does this mean for you, gadget lovers? In theory, a wholalot goodness.

Texas Instruments claims that mobile gadgets using this chip would be able to do all those four functions for less money—30 percent less—in less space—50 percent—and consuming less energy than the current alternatives.

Sony: World’s first TransferJet-compatible LSI for fast data exchange are ready [Wireless]

TransferJet is a close-proximity wireless transfer technology that was introduced by Sony in 2008. Toshiba announced during IFA in Berlin this year they are planning to use the technology in their products soon. The idea is to let two electronic devices quickly exchange data, theoretically at up to 560 Mbps, just by bringing them close together (touch is possible, too).
And today, Sony announced in Tokyo [press release in English] that the first LSIs supporting the standard will be shipped to manufacturers before December starts. The “CXD3267AGG” (pictured on the left) and the “CXD3268AGW” will cost $17.45 each. Sony says they managed to optimize the technology so that TransferJet can now be integrated into smaller electronic devices, too. The LSIs can be used by makers of cell phones, digital cameras, computers and HDDs.
Toshiba and Sony are just two of the 19 companies of the so-called TransferJet Consortium Promoters. Other members include powerhouses such as Panasonic, Sharp or Samsung so it’s possible we’ll get to see a slew of new TransferJet-compatible electronic devices next year.

A Surround Sound Speaker, Not a Dartboard [Home Theater]


The EOps i24R3 Portable isn't just the product of a design student and a 3D modeling program. It's a real, wireless, waterproof, single-speaker surround sound system that was just announced by Hong Kong designer Michael Young. How does it work?
The design is basically one sealed sound chamber filled with enough speakers for an authentic surround sound experience: four, 2.6-inch flat speakers and two, 4.5-inch passive radiator speakers. You'll find a 2x10W Class D amplifier squeezed in that shell as well.
Plugging in or operating off a built-in lithium polymer battery, the i24R3 has no inputs, instead receiving signals over 2.4GHz wireless USB or A2DP Bluetooth—yes, from software like iTunes and devices like iPhones.
And while we have no idea how it actually sounds or how much it actually costs, we have too many regularly-intoxicated friends with too good of access to aerodynamic implements to ever invest in one of our own. [Gizmodo via Michael Young via The Design Blog]

Codenamed Yellow Jacket, This Unmanned Helicopter Sniffs Out Roadside Bombs [Drones]


Roadside bombs are a source of fear for both soldiers as well as their worried families at home. Thankfully the Pentagon is working on projects such as Yellow Jacket, unmanned helicopters which detect electromagnetic emissions from potential IEDs, Improvised Explosive Devices.



As many IEDs are set off using a wireless signal, these drones will be able to survey areas for the electromagnetic emissions associated with receivers and provide an early warning to soldiers. No matter how silly the codename, this is one important project and I hope that it gets put into use as soon as possible.

The GlideTV Navigator is a $150 wireless remote control for use with home theater PC setups. The large-ish center trackpad area is surrounded by various buttons while the outside of the remote features media, search, power, and volume controls.
The remote comes with a charging station and USB receiver that works “with Windows PC, Apple Mac, Sony PlayStation 3, or any set-top box that supports standard mouse and keyboard HID devices,” though the real draw is for Windows users as special GlideTV software can be used to launch applications and web sites, as well as search various popular content providers like Hulu, Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, YouTube, and more.
The Windows-only software also provides a much needed on-screen keyboard.

Imagine never needing to connect your USB cable to transfer photos from your camera to your PC. OK, yeah, Eye-Fi cards let you do that already, but it's a little roundabout, sending your pics to a server via the Web, then transferring them to your computer. TransferJet wireless tech does the same thing, just directly. And faster.
The technology has actually been kicking around for a while, unveiled by Sony a couple of years ago. Now it appears to gaining momentum, with Toshiba recently joining the 40 or so companies developing TransferJet products. The idea is to make file transfers ridiculously easy: When you want to share or move files between devices, just hold put them an inch or two away from each other, and the transfer happens automatically. There's an initial setup to keep it secure, but the short range alone will keep most unwanted connections away.
Because of the short range, the 4.48GHz tech consumes very little power. And the speed is pretty good -- 560 megabits per second (375 Mpbs effective), better than USB 2.0. Checking out a demo of TransferJet here at CEATEC, we were able to check out photos we took on a big screen seconds after we took them. We're sold. When can we get it?

Sony Getting Closer to TVs With No Cables Whatsoever [Wireless Power]


This TV has absolutely no cables connected to it. No video cable. No audio cable. And no power cable. How's this wicked sorcery possible? Thanks to Sony's new Wireless Power Transfer technology, which can send 60 watts over the air.
Sony's Wireless Power Transfer can push 60 watts of electrical energy over almost 20 inches (50 centimeters). That's a pretty decent distance, especially when they say that it can be extended using passive extender units. In fact, they have already achieved 31 inches in other tests.
They claim that their method—which sounds similar to Intel's—uses some dharmastastic magnetic resonance, in which electromagnetic energy gets transmitted from one device to another, both sharing the same resonant frequencies.
Sony says that this system offers 80% efficiency, which may get reduced to about a minimum of 60% if there is a misalignment in the frequencies, which needs to be corrected.
I don't know if this is safe for our bodies or not, but I would like to have it. Even if that requires me not wearing my tinfoil hat while watching the sixth season of Lost.

הטלויזיה החדשה של סוני, ה-XZ1, היא בעובי של 9.9 מ"מ ובגודל 40 אינץ'. לא רק שהיא דקה מאוד היא גם מצליחה להפיק יחסי ניגודיות (קונטרסטים) מאוד גבוהים על-ידי טכנולוגית תאורה אחורית מתקדמת וחדשנית. הם לא עושים שימוש בלדים שממוקמים מאחורי ה-LCD אלא מוליכים אור באופן כזה שהוא מתחלק שווה על כל שטח המסך. האור מגיע מהפינות של המסך.
